On Wednesday, Camacho met with local workers of Basula Produkto Saipan in Lower Base.
“I’m very impressed with their efforts in hiring local people. They train and cross train them,” he said, referring to the business community.
He has visited Laolao Bay Resort, Coral Ocean Point Resort Club and the Pacific Islands Club and met with their management and local workers.
Eric Cruz, Basula Producto Saipan president, said they have at least 10 local workers.
He said “attendance is a problem” but they continue motivating the workers to come to work and learn on a day to day basis.
Cruz said his company is always willing to hire local workers.
“We are still looking for more locals to get involved in our operations. Disposal and recycling are required activities on this island,” he added.
Cruz said he appreciates the municipal council’s efforts to recognize private establishments employing local workers.
He is hoping the council will continue helping local residents to find jobs in the private sector.
“We need the council’s help because they have a list of local individuals seeking jobs,” Cruz said.
Camacho urged unemployed local residents to step forward and look for private sector jobs.
“I appreciate this company and other companies hiring local residents. Once they get hired they should also do their best because life is hard now and the cost of living is high,” he added.
“What we are trying to establish here is a business community that integrates with the local community,” he said.
Most local residents prefer to work for the CNMI government, which pays way higher than the private sector.
