Jove Jenn Maalihan Taman, a graduate of Saipan Southern High School, was selected for the APIASF/USA Funds scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic school year.
Taman will be attending University of Hawaii at Hilo to pursue a degree in nursing.
On July 12, the fund awarded Marianas Variety junior reporter Kevin Harvey Bautista with $2,500 in scholarship for his studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where he will pursue a degree in political science.
Katie Tran-Lam, APIASF director of communications & marketing, said Bautista and Taman are just two of over 500 scholarship recipients who will be going to over 200 colleges and universities for school year 2011-2012.
Tran-Lam said many of the scholarship recipients are well-deserving high school and college students who are the first in their family to attend college.
She said this is the first time for APIASF to award $1.2 million in scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $8,000 for each individual.
The scholarship recipients, Tran-Lam said, all placed a strong emphasis on community service and leadership and maintaining a solid academic achievement. The scholarship recipients include students from different ethnicities.
APIASF is the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted solely to provide college scholarships for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. It has distributed over $40 million in scholarships to students since 2003.
APIASF manages two scholarship programs — APIASF’s general scholarship and the Gates Millennium Scholars/Asian Pacific Islander Americans funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
