Boy Scout Harrison Smith, who currently holds the rank of Life Scout, was the leader of a small band of amateur artists that began the environmental mural that will grace the east facing side of the tennis practice wall.
Looking for a project that was close to his heart, Harrison met with Rachel Zuercher, the nonpoint source pollution coordinator at Coastal Resources Manager, to discuss environmental projects that he could lead in an effort to earn his Eagle Scout Award. Rachel suggested a mural and Harrison began drawing. After gaining approval of the project from Park Ranger Nancy Kelchner, Harrison began meeting with his art teacher, Nancy Provido, to
refine his mural ideas.
After months of work Harrison began contacting community businesses in an effort to collect donations to cover the cost of the mural. “The community has been very generous in their donations,” says Smith. Many businesses have donated monetarily while others have donated materials or other goods, such as drinks and food. “I am grateful to all of those who have already donated.”
Securing the materials meant that the project was moving forward. The next big obstacle was committing volunteers to come and paint. Monday’s volunteers included fellow boy scouts, schoolmates and even some people who just wandered over to see what all the activity was about.
The painting on Monday included a first coat, which will be followed up next Saturday with a second coat and then a sealant.
Thanks to Saipan Ice and Water, Tan Siu Lin Foundation, Herman’s Modern Bakery and Subway Saipan who provided Monday’s refreshments.
Smith hopes that the mural will add some color and fun to the American Memorial corner while reminding all community members how important the reef is to our island life.
