Hart: Work hour reduction to save NMC $60,000

She said this will begin on July 22 and will continue until Sept. 30, 2011.

In its meeting last week, the NMC Board of Regents approved a policy amendment that allows the president to modify employees’ contracts and move forward with the planned reduction in work hours.

The contract amendments are currently being prepared by the college’s human resource office.

“We want to ensure that the college’s limited financial resources are sufficient to support student learning programs and services and to improve institutional effectiveness,” Hart said.

In May, the CNMI Office of Management and Budget said NMC’s budget allotment for the remainder of the fiscal year would be reduced by 7.58 percent or about $340,000.

The college, after a campus-wide dialogue, decided to adjust expenditures by implementing various measures, including the reduction in work hours.

During the board meeting last week, NMC chief administrative and financial officer Roger Madriaga said they projected a slight shortfall even with the reduction in work hours and the approval of a supplemental budget.

NMC said the Saipan Tribune, erroneously reported that the college would have incurred a surplus after the planned work hour reduction was implemented.
