SHRM meeting to discuss ‘Second Chance Initiative’ with justice system representatives

THE Society for Human Resource Management-NMI Chapter will hold its general membership meeting on Wednesday, May 22, 2025, in the Napu Room of the Pacific Islands Club Saipan. Doors open at 8:30 a.m., and the meeting will run from 9 a.m. to 11 :30 a.m.

The meeting will feature a powerful and timely presentation titled “Second Chance Initiative,” highlighting the efforts of the Office of Adult Probation Supervision and the Drug Court Division. This initiative advocates for employment opportunities and community support for individuals navigating the justice system.

Presenters include Weena Gwendolyn lguel, chief probation officer, who will be joined by Nadia M. Maratita and Susan Cabrera of OAPS, along with Ed Diaz of DCD. Together, they will provide an in-depth look at:

1) Who they are

2) What they do

3) Who they serve

4) Barriers individuals in the system face

5) How employment can reduce the risk of re-offending

6) Practical suggestions for employers and community members

SHRM-NMI President Roman Tudela emphasized the importance of this conversation, stating: “Our community thrives when we support all its members. By giving individuals a second chance through meaningful employment, we not only uplift lives-we strengthen families, businesses, and our economy.”
