Rotary Club’s focus: Family, continuity, changes

In his message read by Saipan Rotary Club secretary Laila Y. Boyer during yesterday’s  meeting at the Hyatt, Kalyan Banerjee of India, Rotary International president for 2011-2012, said:  “All our service, everything we wish to achieve in our world begins with the family.”

Continuity, which is the second emphasis for the Rotary year, means finding the things that we do well and taking them to the next level, he added.

Things that need to be changed must be changed, he said.

“We must have the courage to see these, identify them and work to make the changes.

This year’s Rotary theme is “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.”

“First we find our own peace, then work to establish peace in our homes and our families and communities. We cannot work to build peace in the world without first building it in our homes,” Banerjee said.

Tapochau renovation

In other news, the Saipan Rotary Club will donate part of the proceeds for the 16th Annual Tournament of Champions at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort on Aug. 6-7.

Rotarian and DFS Saipan Ltd. assistant general manager for operations Ben Babauta said they will help fund the $45,000 rehabilitation and renovation projects of Mt. Tapochao’s viewing peak.

Babauta said the Hotel Association of Northern Mariana Islands is raising funds, along with the Japan Saipan Travel Association, the Marianas Visitors Authority, the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, Korean tour operators, Chinese tour operators and the Saipan Rotary Club.

Mt. Tapochau, a popular tourist spot, is the highest point of Saipan.

Babauta told the Variety that work on the project is expected to start soon.

It includes the removal of existing corroded metal railings and installation of new metal railings on the stairs, pathways, viewing and monument areas, constructing a small set of stairs to link the viewing and monument areas, painting the metal railings, constructing latte stone pedestals throughout and topping and leveling areas that are hazardous.

The project is expected to be completed in 60 days, Babauta said.

He is inviting the community to join the Tournament of Champions and help raise more funds for the club’s other projects, too.
