No Japan trip for Saipan Awaodori team next month

Sonia Siwa of PDM Promoters Inc. said the trip was postponed because of the disaster that hit Japan last March.

“We will have no representation in Tokyo this year,” Siwa said.

But the Saipan Awaodori team will  not stop its regular practices, she said.

“After a series of presentations in the past months for the different events, the team is resting for now but they will resume their regular practices very soon,” Siwa said.

The best performers from the Saipan Awaodori Team are picked out and sent to Tokyo to join the annual Awaodori Festival that takes place in Koenji each year.

In 2009, financial constraints limited the group to send only two members to join the annual street dancing festival.

Last year, the group started their solicitation and fundraising activities earlier and was able to send eight from over 60 members of the team to join the Tokyo Tensuiren group.

The Koenjie Awaodori Festival is the second biggest event in Japan next to the Tokushima festival each year.

Composed of young members from Gualo Rai, Tanapag and Koblerville, the Saipan Awaodori team continues to recruit interested individuals.
