A toilet running constantly could waste over 20,000 gallons in one month and may cost a user $100, CUC’s water quality report stated.
CUC said its water operators have repaired about 120 leaks each month on Saipan waterlines.
Leaks also occur on the customer’s waterlines or within homes and businesses, the report said.
An overflowing storage tank spilling one gallon per minute wastes 43,000 gallons of water in one month costing approximately $225 in water and over $100 in sewer fees if it is connected to the public sewer system, the report said.
But CUC Deputy Executive Director Alan W. Fletcher said their program on water conservation and the commitment to safe clean drinking water is showing good result.
“Each year we conduct thousands of water quality and analytical tests in order to provide out customer with clean safe drinking water,” he said.
He said CUC has faced many challenges but it is able to repair and upgrade its delivery system and provide quality drinking water to residents and businesses.
In 2010, he added, CUC experienced only one total coliform water quality violation which was due to faulty sample equipment.
“An excellent record and a vast improvement over past years,” Fletcher said.
He said CUC has also improved water service to customers by increasing delivery throughout Saipan.
This achievement, he said, is due to the hard work by CUC’s staff and its partnership with the Water Task Force, the Office of Insular Affairs, the EPA and the U.S. Public Health Service.
“We will have more to do in order to complete this goal and coupled with our work in water quality, we will continue our commitment to safe clean drinking water for all of the CNMI,” he added.
