CUC Deputy Executive Director Alan W. Fletcher said they are still actively recruiting for the position.
“That’s critical for us and for [the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] so we are working with them to fill the position as quickly as possible,” he said.
At present, the duties of the technical manager for oil are being delegated to some CUC personnel, he added.
Fletcher said CUC personnel are performing extra work to help manage fluid and oil handling issues.
CUC has already hired Sherman Pacific, a recruiting and staffing services firm, to help find a qualified technical manager for oil.
Fletcher said they have already interviewed eight applicants but CUC wants to have a larger pool of applicants.
“This is a matter of finding the right person with the right techniques and right combination of technical skills that fit our organization,” he said.
The EPA, he added, is not involved in the hiring process but it reviews the résumés of the applicants.
“We want their input,” Fletcher said, adding that the EPA is willing to give its “perspective” on the qualifications of the applicants.
CUC Executive Director Abe Utu Malae said the EPA wants them to thoroughly examine the candidates because of the seriousness of oil management compliance issues.
The EPA wants to ensure that the person selected possesses not only the skills but current knowledge of the industry, he said.
Fletcher said the EPA will verity the minimum qualifications of the technical manager for oil based on the federal stipulated orders which require CUC to comply with U.S. standards.
The minimum requirements are four years in college with major work in engineering, science or other fields related to work in engineering, science, project management and environmental compliance; and one to three years of experience in oil spill prevention, preparedness and response, environmental assessment, construction oversight or power plant operations.
The technical manager for oil post was vacated by William Sword whose resignation took effect on Dec. 17, 2010.
The position has a two-year contract and salary from $85,000 to $140,000.
