Liberation Committee to invite off-island performers

The committee is now trying to arrange the accommodations of these performers on Saipan.

The committee will be tapping mostly local entertainers during the month-long celebration.

The Fourth of July parade will begin at the National Office Supply on Beach Road at 9 a.m. and will end at 1 p.m.

The committee is expecting more float and parade participants.

This year’s prizes for the float contest are $2,000 for first place; $1,500, second place; and $1,000 for third place.

The committee said it already discussed with Military Veterans Affairs Office Executive Officer Ruth Coleman  the military aircraft flyby  over Saipan on July 4.

Tinian, Rota and Northern Island mayors are also encouraged to participate by sending their grand marshals to Saipan, the committee said.

Because of budgetary constraint, the committee cannot pay for the transportation and other expenses of these grand marshals.

On Saipan, the committee said, Mayor Donald G. Flores will nominate the island’s grand marshal before the end of May.

The Liberation Committee also decided to set up rented tents instead of constructing wooden booths for vendors and concessionaires.

The committee has yet to get the $45,000 budget for the Liberation Day festivities.

The committee is hoping that the Legislature and the executive branch will release the Liberation Day funds “in a timely manner so we can perform effectively and don’t have to wait for long time.”

The committee is still inviting interested individuals to be part of the program for the Liberation Queen pageant, the parade, concessions, public relations and entertainment.

“We are asking the business community if they can donate and sponsor Liberation Day events,” the committee said.
