Letter to the Editor: All for autism

Autism is a neurological and development disorder that affects each person differently and at different levels of severity.  It varies widely in complexities, symptoms, and how it disrupts the senses, learning, and social skills.  This is the reason it is referred to as autism spectrum.  People on the spectrum experience the world differently than others, and their development is likely to be uneven, with some skills stronger than others and even those without autism.  Many on the spectrum have remarkable memories and other positive qualities and talents and become very successful in their chosen fields, as did Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain and others with autism.

What causes autism is still uncertain, but it’s linked to genes, vaccines, environment, and diet.  The increase in autism cases is in direct proportion to the increase in vaccinations and many non-autistic kids developed autism symptoms immediately after receiving vaccinations.  Diets that eliminate gluten (wheat) and dairy help stop symptoms, and therefore are also considered a cause.

It is important to be aware of autism symptoms and how to act toward people on the autism spectrum.  The earlier symptoms are recognized and addressed the more likely they can be corrected.  Some symptoms include tendencies to not recognize others or socialize, to stick to routines and avoid change, to have a narrow range of interests and often be fixated on a particular activity or object, to develop irrational fears or anxieties, and to demonstrate bizarre behaviors and mannerisms.  Many on the spectrum are extra sensitive to hearing, smelling, vision, and touch, and that is why they may hold their ears or leave loud or strong smelling situations and do not like to be touched.

What’s needed this month and continuing long beyond is All for Autism through all being aware of it and accepting those with it through thinking of AUTISM as an acronym for Ask questions, Understand, Tell others, Include, Show support, and Make a difference.  In doing so you’ll benefit them, yourself, and all.
