Last month, the Senate Committee on Public Utilities, Transportation and Communications disclosed its plan to conduct an oversight hearing on CUC.
The chairman of the committee, Sen. Juan M. Ayuyu, Ind.-Rota, said his panel and its House counterpart want to look into CUC’s utility rate increases and compliance with federal stipulated orders.
Malae said, “Legislators are supposed to behave the way they are behaving — that is what legislators do, to advocate for their constituents.”
But, he added, the Legislature has already created a forum to discuss rate increases — the Commonwealth Public Utilities Commission.
CUC can ask for a rate increase, he added, but it is the commission that can either approve it or not.
On Monday, April 11, CPUC will conduct a public hearing regarding CUC’s proposed power rate hike.
The hearing will start at 10 a.m. in the Marianas Public Land Trust conference room on Capital Hill.
