Kapileo, 30, who was charged with disturbing the peace, assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault, failed to post bail and was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections.
His preliminary hearing was set for April 20 while his arraignment will be held on May 2.
A witness who was at LF Market at the time of the incident positively identified Kapileo as the one who stabbed Hua Ming Zheng.
Zheng sustained bruises and a wound on his left arm that required 31 stitches.
Detective Melissa H. Bauleong said witnesses, including the minor relatives of the suspect, told police Kapileo went to the store to buy more beer when he met Zheng who was then delivering tofu.
Kapileo approached Zheng in front of the store and asked if he could see his wallet.
When Zheng refused, Kapileo slapped him on the back of his head, police said.
Kapileo then broke Zheng’s cell phone when the delivery man attempted to call the police.
Zheng ran back to the store and made a second attempt to call the police but Kapileo followed.
According to police, Kapileo then punched Zheng twice on the head, gave him an elbow and then pulled out a gray pocket knife from his left pocket and stabbed the victim’s left arm.
The defendant’s younger brother attempted to stop Kapileo but failed, police said.
After the incident, the brothers and another minor relative who was with them went home.
