Lisa Eller of DEQ yesterday urged the community to watch the free movies at the American Memorial Park Visitor Center.
Tomorrow, the movie “The Mighty River” will be shown at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. while “Recyclergy” will be screened at 4 p.m.
On Thursday, “Recyclergy” will be shown at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., while “The Mighty River” will be screened at 4 p.m.
“The Mighty River” is an animated Academy Award nominated film about the St. Lawrence River “whose waters once teemed with animal and plant life but today bear witness to decades of over-exploitation and industrial pollution.”
“Recyclergy” focuses on the first Earth Day celebration in 1970 when recycling centers began to pop up everywhere with the goal of bringing recycling to their cities. The film features interviews with recycling pioneers.
The first two free movie afternoons were held on April 12 and 13 and featured “Disneynature’s Oceans” and “Sharkwater.”
The four movies were shown as a result of an online poll in which people get to vote on the First Friday Films they would like to be shown during Environmental Awareness Month.
“Sharkwater” garnered 12 votes, “The Mighty River” got 11, while “Recyclergy” received 15.
DEQ held the First Friday Films People’s Choice Award last March.
Since July last year, DEQ and the National Park Service have partnered to offer free environmental films to the public on the first Friday of every month.
