27th Attorney General’s Cup set for April 28

The event kicks off National Law Week, which is held May 2 through 6, and is a series of events and activities at the Guma’ Hustisia that aim to promote our students’ understanding of the rule of law.

The cup was started by Associate Justice Alexandro C. Castro while he was the attorney general in the mid-1980s.

Through the dedicated efforts of Castro and the AG’s who succeeded him, the event has continued as an important and prestigious competition that fosters critical thinking and public speaking among our islands’ youth.

“It’s our privilege to continue the cup again this year,” said current AG Ed Buckingham.

As with last year, the judges will be those who have formally held the position of CNMI AG: Castro, Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja, former Presiding Judge Edward Manibusan, former Associate Judge Herbert D. Soll, and former AG’s Pamela S. Brown, Matthew T. Gregory, Rexford Kosack and Buckingham.

“It is an honor to hold the Cup in trust for the students, the future leaders of our commonwealth,” said Justice Castro.

The competition brings together some of the finest young minds to debate crucial issues affecting our islands.

As a result, topics have often proved controversial and this year’s topic is no exception.

“With the signing of the Covenant with the United States, the people of the CNMI decided to become a commonwealth instead of an independent country. With that decision, the United States gained control over some decision-making powers that normally would exist if the CNMI had been independent. Should the CNMI consider becoming an independent country or remain a commonwealth of the United States? Please analyze and discuss the impact of your proposed decision — both positive and negative.”

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial will address the contestants and Rita C. Chong, 1986 winner from Marianas High School, will give the inspirational remarks. John Gonzales and Liz Wahl have volunteered to serve as emcees of the event.

The competition is open to the public and it is being sponsored by the Office of the Attorney General, the CNMI Bar Association, and the judiciary.

Monetary and in-kind donations from our elected leaders and the private sector have greatly contributed to the success of the competition.
