Letters of Hope from local students turned over to Japan Rotarians

“I’m sorry for what happened. I hope you can rebuild fallen buildings, this time with stronger materials, and I hope you can recover all your losses….”

These are just two of the 823 letters collected by the mayor’s office of Saipan from students of different schools on island to offer comfort to the people of Japan who have suffered from the devastating earthquake and tsunami last March 11.

Vinycia Seman, executive secretary of the mayor’s office, turned over  letters, cards, poems, works of art such as creative paper folding,  drawings and pictures expressing the children’s messages of hope to the representatives of the Hasaki Rotary Club during the Rotary Club of Saipan meeting at the Hyatt yesterday.

Izumi Junichiro, president of the Hasaki Rotary Club of Japan, accepted the letters and said  they will facilitate the distribution to students and families.

Junichiro, who is here with seven other Rotarians from Hasaki and four exchange students, expressed his thanks to the Saipan community.

The Saipan mayor’s office launched the project called “Kibo No Tegami-Letters of Hope” on April 1 to show local support  for the people of Japan.

Saipan Mayor Donald Flores earlier said giving donations would not be enough to ease the pain of the victims of the disaster.

He sought the assistance of school principals to encourage students to spend a few minutes writing letters of hope and encouragement to the victims in Japan.
