Annual Boy Scout summer camp set for June

The week-long event from June 26 to July 2 will be held at the more than two hectares open field of Kan Pacific, organizers said.

On Thursday, organizers including Boy Scouts of America island director Calistro Reyes, district chairman Jess Muna, district commissioner Wayne Gillespie and camp program director Oscar Camacho, met with Mariana Resort & Spa general manager Gloria Cruz Cavanagh at the camp site.

Organizers said they chose the area because it’s the “safest and most conducive” for scouting activities.

Reyes said the objective of the summer camp is to teach Cub Scouts, 7- to 10-year-olds, hands-on training on basic knot tying, tent pitching and physical fitness.

Boy Scouts from 11 to 17 years old will focus on first aid, swimming and other camping skills, he added.

The experienced and older scouts  17 years old and above will concentrate on getting merit badges for woodcarving, fishing, electronics, basketry, conservation and environmental awareness badges, Reyes said.

During the summer camp, only the Boy Scouts will be staying at the site while the Cub Scouts will attend training sessions from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Reyes said the participants will put up  a Banadero Trail sign and plant tress in designated areas.

Cavanagh said Mariana Resort & Spa management is happy to host this year’s summer camp.

“We want to make this event more comfortable,” she added. The resort has also hosted previous Boy Scout summer camps.

Last year, the summer camp was postponed due to financial constraint, Reyes said.

Muna, for his part, encourages adult volunteers to share their expertise and knowledge with the scouts.

Reyes said they will start setting up  camp on June 23.
