This is Oklahoma’s second visit to Saipan, according to CNMI Military and Veterans Affairs Executive Director Ruth Coleman.
It first visited Saipan in Nov. 2004.
“This is the first R&R for officers and crewmembers of USS Oklahoma in a long time, and many of their family members flew in to join them here for their brief vacation,” Coleman said.
Last night, the Saipan Chamber of Commerce was scheduled to host a reception for the sailors at the 360 Revolving Restaurant in Susupe.
Coleman said the submarine will depart Saipan on Thursday.
Launched in November 1985, USS Oklahoma City is the second ship of the Navy to be named for the city.
USS Oklahoma just finished a 26-month overhaul and was forward deployed to Guam last March.
