Saipan Lions join SAFE Jamboree

Lions Club region secretary Paul Madriaga said the event capped the observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month on April 30.

The Lions Club has joined the coalition against sexual violence.

“It was a very successful event and lots of young people learned about the importance of leadership and community service,” Madriaga said.

One of the programs of the Lions Club International is the Leo Club.  Leo stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity.

The Alpha Leo Club members are usually 12 to 18 years old while the Omega Leos are from 19 to 30.

Madriaga said the Leo Clubs provide youth volunteer opportunities that inspire  by giving them the chance to learn, grow and serve through participation in community service projects.

Leo Club activities include youth camps and exchange programs.

During the jamboree, Lion Fely Angel, a Leo Club advisor from Guam, gave insights about the Leo Club, including the benefits of joining the group.

Madriaga said the Saipan Lions program was attended by their Guam counterparts headed by District Governor Romy Angel, District Governor-elect Rey Acierto and Immediate Past District Governor Melen Ruiz.

Saipan Unity, Saipan Marianas and Saipan Fil-Am Lions also joined the jamboree.

To date, Madriaga said there are more than 144,000 young people in 139 countries who are proud to serve in their local communities and call themselves Leos.

“These young community leaders are friendly, active and dedicated to creating new and exciting youth volunteer opportunities by participating in their local Leo Clubs,” he added.

Leos and Lions aim to help the community while gaining valuable skills by making an impact on people’s lives, he said.

“They learn to be a leader and to lead a respected organization. They also ‘network’ with business people in the community and around the world, and energize their lives and have fun,” he added.

“You’ll grow personally and professionally. And you’ll know that the community volunteer work you perform is worthwhile and appreciated,” Madriaga said.
