Beach front litter is not only unsightly, but packs many negative aspects that affect our lives in our island home. Do you think tourists pay top dollar to come to beaches littered with trash? Doesn’t seem like a good value to me! Besides the negative impact to the tourism industry, our fragile marine ecosystems have to suffer for our negligence. Trash that is left unchecked or scattered around refuse containers could easily find their way to the water because of its close proximity, wind forces scattering debris, and stray animals tearing into unsecured trash bags.
Fortunately there is an easy way to put an end to the madness. Practice proper waste disposal by securing all garbage in fortified containers. Ensure that no container is filled past its capacity. If the container is full, better to bring your own to secure your trash! Reduce your dependence on disposables like Styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery…if you bring less to throw away, less will end up in trash cans.
The Mariana Islands Nature Alliance would like to remind the public that what we do on land affects the ocean.
Keeping the beaches clean is everyone’s responsibility!
