Taiwan company to provide international roaming services to Palau

Vibo Telecom will partner with Palau Mobile Corp., one of the two mobile carriers operating here. The other is the government-run Palau National Communications Co.

Early this month, Vibo Telecom signed a memorandum of agreement with Palau Mobile.

Under the agreement, Vibo will build 20 high-speed HSPA + (3.75G) base stations for Palau Mobile sometime this year.

Vibo Telecom has already submitted an application to the government for procuring HSPA + equipment, consisting of a core network and base stations from the Chinese firm ZTE. The procurement will include base stations for Palau Mobile.

Vibo Telecom and Palau Mobile will  share revenues from the roaming charges. Seventy to 80 percent of Palau Mobile’s revenues in 2010 came from voice roaming services, which are offered only to Palau’s tourists.

The HSPA + data roaming services for Palau are scheduled to be launched in second quarter of this year.

Vibo Telecom Inc. is a 3G mobile network operator in Taiwan. The company is a subsidiary of the Kinpo group.

Vibo Telecom earlier announced its plans to spend more than $65 million to boost its number of base stations to attract more customers and bring in additional profits. The company expects the number of its subscribers to increase from the current 1.85 million to 2.5 million by the end of 2011.
