Unlike the annual fishing derbies hosted in the previous years, participants are only allowed to enter the waters through Smiling Cove Marina. Because the date has been pushed back, this gives other interested participants more time to register and compete.
Launching time will start at 6 a.m. Saturday and the derby will run from go-time until 5pm. Pre-registration will also be at the Smiling Cove Marina tomorrow from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The entrance fee per boat is $100 for one captain and three crew members for a total of four people on the boat. There will be an additional $25 fee for additional crew members.
The type of fishing used for this derby will be trolling. According to Wikipedia trolling fishing “is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water. This may be behind a moving boat, or by slowly winding the line in when fishing from a static position, or even sweeping the line from side-to-side.”
Pre-boating safety inspection is highly encouraged by the committee members. All members are to contact the Department of Public Safety (Boating Safety Unit) at telephone number 664-9180 for inspections.
Only Mahi-Mahis will be accepted during the official weigh in at the Marina Cove regardless of weight qualifications brought by any other type of fish.
Officials from the Saipan Fishermen’s Association will go over the Rules and Regulation of the 7th Annual Miller Lite Mahi Fishing Derby. For more information regarding the upcoming derby please email Frank Tudela at [email protected] or call 664-3200/01 or visit their official website at www.sfacnmi.com.
