FHB senior vice president and region manager for Guam and CNMI Laura-Lynn V. Dacanay and local bank officers yesterday turned over the check to NMTI president Anthony Pellegrino at the Gualo Rai Branch.
Dacanay said FHB came up with the amount by allotting $1 from each new account opened at any of the two bank branches here beginning April 1 to Dec. 31, 2010.
She said FHB already has a scholarship program for Northern Marianas College from the proceeds of the annual Businesswoman of the Year Award.
“We choose NMTI as the recipient because they focus on training skilled workers — something that is needed especially with the military buildup on Guam,” Dacanay said.
Dacanay said FHB is proud to help provide opportunities for the students to get the training and skills they need to qualify for higher paying construction jobs.
On Wednesday, FHB Guam turned over an $18,000 donation to the Guam Contractors Association Trades Academy. The money came from the three FHB branches on Guam.
Pellegrino told the Variety that he is very grateful for the donation they are getting from the community.
“This is very generous of FHB, and we are humbled for being chosen as the donation recipient,” Pellegrino said.
The donation will go a long way to help provide opportunities for individuals to be trained in the different fields of vocational training, he added.
Pellegrino said they will use the money to build more classrooms and purchase more supplies and equipment for the school. NMTI needs about $30,000 to $35,000 to build five classrooms.
Pellegrino said yesterday’s donation was the second they received from FHB. On Nov. 1 last year, NMTI received a $10,000 grant from the FHB Foundation, the charitable arm of First Hawaiian Bank.
NMTI was established in 2008 and is certified by the National Center for Construction, Education and Research, which is affiliated with the University of Florida.
FHB has been serving its clients on Guam and Saipan for over 152 years with “Service, Solutions and Security.”
