Red Cross walkathon to raise funds for Japan disaster victims

NMI chapter executive director John Hirsh said despite the hard economic times, they are hoping for the full support of the community.

“Preparations are going well with favorable responses from both government and private agencies and all other organizations involved with the event, and we are hoping the people will come out and support us like they have done in the past,” Hirsh said, referring to the walkathon.

He said they hope to surpass last year’s $45,000 collections.

“The annual walkathon this year is different because we are celebrating our 25th anniversary, and we are going to help the survivors of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan with part of our proceeds,” Hirsh said.

He said $5,000 can go a long way to add to the contributions of the different local organizations and groups that have been providing assistance to the victims of the disaster in Japan.

Hirsh said lots of exciting activities and programs are in store for this year’s walkathon.

“We have so many giveaways for our participants such as USBs, t-shirts, and other prizes,” Hirsh said.

As added attraction, the Saipan Zoo will once again showcase some of its animals that children can pet and play with.

“We will also have healthcare workers who will conduct blood pressure check and monitoring, and hopefully we can even offer immunizations and flu shots,” he said.

But, he added this has yet to be finalized  with the Department of Public Health.

The Transpacific Group of Companies is again this year’s Red Cross partner.
