Some grateful, spiteful of student portfolio

The student portfolio is supposed to be a useful tool for students to achieve independence and success.

Kagman High School counselor Sharon San Nicolas said it is typical for students to lack appreciation for the importance of the portfolio especially during their freshman year.

However, when the students reach their junior year they will fully comprehend the extent of all the work they put into their portfolio and the benefits it provides them.

The requirements include 27 items that need to be completed by the end of each student’s senior year.

San Nicolas said the penalty for an incomplete portfolio is to bar a student from making the memorable walk with classmates during their graduation ceremony.

San Nicolas said the student will still receive a diploma.

The portfolio includes recommendation letters, résumés, academic goals, and college applications, just to name a few.

Some students find the portfolio a great tool for job and college searches, but others find it a huge waste of time.

Crystal Santos, a 12th grader, said  the portfolio will be useful to her when she applies for college because of the recommendation letters, transcripts and applications that will be made ready before she graduates.

She said she will be much more prepared than those who were never introduced to the portfolio system.
