Bennett, Wong are athletes of the year

Bennett and Wong have both been off island seeking a higher level education and have enrolled in Boise State University and University of Hawaii at Manoa respectively.

Bennett nailed this award twice before being awarded last Thursday night making it her third time in a row. NMASA proudly handed her father the award.

She competed in the 7th Micronesian Games in Palau last year leading team CNMI to the gold in the 4×400 meter and 4×100 meter relay races. Bennett also won the 100 meter dash at the National Championships finishing with the season’s best time at 13.17 seconds.

Wong is currently in Hawaii broadcasting his talents by making into and swimming for the NCAA Division I for University if Hawaii at Manoa.

Like Bennett, he competed in the 7th Micronesian Games and he garnered 12 gold medals and one silver. He also bagged the Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the Micronesian Games in Palau.

Miller, Rangamar bag ‘athlete of the month’ awards

On the other hand the NMASA Male and Female Student Athletes of the Month were also recognized during the banquet.

Christian Miller and Liamwar Rangamar, better known as Lia, nailed the coveted award and were both quite delighted and honored as a life-size cut out of themselves were revealed during the banquet.

Miller received the NMASA’s nod after winning the Boys 18 and under single title at the Coconut Classics competing with many other players older than himself having to beat the top two seeds to achieve greatness.

Miller also was a two-time North Pacific champion. He moved up two age classes to face a higher level of competition last year.

Rangamar is highly recognized both in the world of Basketball and Athletics.  Rangamar took the heavy and demanding roll of lead point guard for Marianas High School to lead her team unscathed in the Marians Inter-Scholastic Sports Organization’s Girl’s Basketball Tournament. She also led them to the championship match of the 2010 Settsu-Saipan Friendship Basketball Tournament.

She then moved on to represent the CNMI at the Oceania U18 Championships in Sydney, Australia setting a new CNMI junior national record in the javelin competition. Rangamar then moved on to win first place in the shot-put, discus, javelin, 1500 meter, 800 meter, and 400 meter competition.

She also placed among the top four in three other events at the All Schools Qualifier. She set personal bests in four events and qualified for the Micronesian Games.
