Biking for unity, friendship, health

Another group will follow the route from the Pacific Islands Club to the Last Command Post and the Japanese and Korean Peace Memorials in Marpi.

Upon reaching their destinations, James Abuy, one of the mountain bikers, said they will enjoy an hour of sightseeing.

From Mt. Tapochao, the group will go down and converge again at their meeting place, which is the American Memorial Park parking lot.

That’s where I met Abuy and his friends Ric Antonio, Rod Reyes, Charley Senden and Noel Ignacio.

They all work for the Pacific Islands Club’s engineering department, but their group now includes biking enthusiasts from the Coral Ocean Point Resort.

Sometimes, these bikers ride all the way to Suicide Cliff, Bird Island and the back road.

Their group, which includes at least 30 individuals from PIC, has been biking on island since 2008.

They also participate in the “Bike for Life” fundraising event on Saipan.

“Our general manager Kieran Daly at PIC is very supportive of this fundraising event,” Antonio said.

He said their group may be nameless, “but the important thing is that we are united and we continue to encourage other people on island to stay healthy through biking.”

“We just do this as a hobby and also to remain physically fit,” Abuy said.

They have met a lot of bikers on island from different ethnicities and have become friends with them, too.

Although they are considered “nonprofessional bikers,” they are always equipped with all the safety gadgets when on the road.

“There is joy in this hobby because there’s always a sense of camaraderie regardless of one’s race,” they said.
