Republican spending cuts will hurt NMI programs

“The measure is still being debated in the House of Representatives as we go to press. But there is no doubt that there will be substantial cuts to many important programs the people in the Northern Mariana Islands depend on,” he added.

Even Head Start, Special Education, and Title I funding for education are on the chopping block.

“We all agree that we have to get our fiscal house in order. But the place to start is with programs that are wasteful and ineffective. In my view, keeping people healthy and fed, providing our children the education they need, and helping communities like ours with funding for water and sewer projects and other community development efforts is not wasteful — it’s necessary.

“I spoke during debate on Interior’s technical assistance program in opposition to the proposed $7 million decrease.”

Below is a list of the programs that directly benefit the people in the Northern Marianas that Republicans want to cut.

• Pell Grants: Maximum award cut from $4,860 to $4,015

• Head Start: $1 billion

• Special Education: $579.7 million

• Adult Education: $208.1 million

• Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children, or WIC: $758 million

• National Institute of Food and Agriculture: $217.1 million

• Agricultural Research Service: $185 million

• Rural Housing Service Loans & Grants: $208.8 million

• Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: $786.3 million

• Assistance to Territories: $6.679 million

• Leaking Underground Storage Tanks: $7 million

• Clean Water Fund: $1.4 billion

• Safe Drinking Water Fund: $557 million

• EPA diesel emissions grants: $10 million

• Fish and Wildlife Service: $72 million

• Endangered Species Conservation Fund: $82.5 million

• Job Training Programs: $2 billion
