Guest worker advocate gets death threat

It was not the first threat that he received, he said.

This time, however, even his family was threatened.

“I’m going to chop your feet and your hand and kill you and your family,” he recalled the caller as saying.

Syed is the president of the United Workers Movement, which is advocating improved status for long-term nonresidents in the CNMI.

He said the threats will not stop him from his cause.

“I’m not afraid and nothing can stop me,” he added.

He said the caller used a Carolinian family name and called him twice on his phone.

Syed said he immediately reported the incident to the police.

An officer from the Department of Public Safety met him and advised him to stay safe.

Syed said he is asking  local authorities and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to help secure his family from possible harm and danger.

On Tinian, Syed said nonresident workers were united in advocating for  improved immigration status that will lead to U.S. citizenship.

Based on his information, there were more than 500 guest workers on Tinian but only few attended the public hearing of the Senate Committee on Federal Relations and Independent Agencies.

Only two guest workers provided testimony during the hearing, Syed said.

Syed was accompanied by Ronnie Doca, the chairman of the United Workers Movement, on Tinian.
