Tokyo group postpones April performances on Saipan

Sonia Siwa of Padeo De Marianas Promoters Inc. told the Variety that this year was supposed to be the group’s fifth visit to Saipan.

“The Tokyo Tensuiren group has been coming here without fail every April for the past four years, but this year they will have to postpone their visit because some of them feel it is not proper to make the trip when so many of their countrymen are suffering,” Siwa said.

This year is also the 26th anniversary of the Tokyo Tensuiren group.

“We would have loved to watch them perform here and we will miss them this year but we understand why they had to postpone their trip,” Siwa said.

The Tokyo Tensuiren and the Saipan Awaodori dance group usually perform together at the different venues on Saipan.

Last year, the two groups performed at Koblerville Elementary School, outside  DFS Galleria and in other Garapan venues, including the street market.

The Tokyo Tensuiren group includes over 20 members who play  different traditional Japanese instruments.
