The age of technology — and couch potatoes

It is likely you have a cell phone or a wireless device with you right at this moment. Cell phones, iPods and Playstation Portables are part of the revolutionary shift of the 21st century I’d like to dub the “era of sloth.” These technologies are rapidly growing into very common household items. Kids and adults alike spend an average 6 to 12 hours every day with their head and eyes cast downwards into their wireless device. Many if not all households now own cell phones instead of landlines and almost every person in each household owns at least one type of wireless technology.

Video games have also gone through a major transformation. From bulky, huge consoles and cartridges you’d have to blow into in order for it to work, to slim, high-definition, internet-accessible consoles and slim hassle-free compact discs you simply pop into the console without wasting a breath. Yes, this is called revolution and the American dream of a more convenient America.

You see cooking machines that require little to no hassle to create beautiful dishes. There are diet programs that promise an awesome body with little effort in exercise. Teenagers hang out with their friends through the internet and rarely have a real live hang out. There are machines that dig for people in their small little garden so that they have a place to put their plants. There are fast-food restaurants to get a quick meal. Technology is creating a lazier nation with lazier kids as the years float on by. Where is the genuine hard work? Where is the satisfaction that something was actually done through the labor of your love? It is almost non-existent. So where does all the saved energy end up? In your buns and thighs, people!

Because of the way life has changed over the last few decades there has been a general increase in teen obesity as well as obesity in the general sense of the entire population. Because of the modern age of computers, computer games, fast foods and extended recreational times the teen obesity problem will not go away without a solution put into place to stop this trend. Obesity is now considered as a serious epidemic.

If you find yourself at the end of this scale, it is time to do something about it. I will provide a few tips to start being a bit more active outside and gradually work your way up with more activity. Put down the Xbox controller and your BlackBerry for at least an hour every day. Don’t worry, you won’t get sick or die from lack of technology.

If you have brothers or sisters, invite them outside for a friendly game of dodge ball. If you don’t have a ball, or any type of sport equipment, then hit the beach! We are on an island after all. There isn’t a more perfect workout than a good day of swimming with friends and family. You’re working out and having fun at the same time. Believe it or not, you can always have a good workout without actually feeling like you are working out.

It is important to always have fun when doing something active or else you will quickly lose interest in what you are doing. If you are looking for a faster way to lose weight you can always control your food intake and the types of food you consume. Do not resort to fasting! It only results in more food consumption in the end. The most important rule to effectively lose weight is to eat healthy.
