Camacho: Locals willing to work in private sector

He is now employed as a “green keeper” of the Coral Ocean Point Resort Club.

Takahiro Omori, the resort’s assistant general manager, said he admires the diligence of Sanchez.

“He has a good working attitude,” Omori added.

Ramon B. Camacho, Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council chairman, said Sanchez is an example of local residents willing to work in the private sector if given a chance.

Camacho said he wants to “eradicate the perception” that local residents are “undependable and unreliable” in the working place.

“I am appealing to the business community that they should consider local residents for their workforce,” he added.

Camacho said hiring more locals in the private sector will help the economy.

He noted that most of the earnings of foreign workers are sent to their home country.

There are lots of private sector jobs that do not require skills and can be handled by local residents, he said.

The problem is that businesspersons have the wrong perception about the dependability of local workers, Camacho said.

Omori agreed. He said it’s always wrong to “generalize.”

Camacho said his office is willing to initiate an orientation program for local residents who want to work in the private sector.

This orientation will discuss work ethics and the expectations of employers, he added.

Omori said local residents need to acquire some skills to compete with the foreign workers.

But this can be addressed by  a training program, he added.

Camacho said he met Sanchez last year and learned that he was looking for a job.

Sanchez said he finished sixth grade only but wants to help his brother and sisters with their daily needs.

He is residing in a Koblerville house without power and water.

Sanchez said they get water from their small rain catchment.
