Last year’s arrivals also exceeded by more than 5,000 the target set by the Palau Visitors Authority.
Japan, South Korea and Taiwan remained the top customers of the local tourism industry.
According to PVA records, there were 29,318 Japanese, 22,161 Taiwanese, and 15,144 South Korean visitors in 2010.
PVA officials attributed the increase to the improving global economy, more extensive promotion of local tourism sites, launching of new airlines and additional charter flights to and from this island nation.
Palau, whose main industry is tourism, is known for its unspoiled natural wonders which include some of the world’s best diving and snorkeling sites.
Palau is also a popular destination for upscale travelers interested in marine ecotourism.
