THE NMI will plant a Field of Heroes, a garden of about 500 American flags, in a series of commemorative events on Saipan, Tinian and Rota to honor those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks against the United States in 2001.

A Tan Holdings Corporation and Tan Siu Lin Foundation initiative, the Field of Heroes is an annual commemoration launched in 2016 not only to honor those who perished in the Sept. 11 attacks but also to recognize local heroes — including first responders, military personnel, veterans, and essential workers — who have served during natural disasters.

“Serving is definitely a calling, and we are so grateful for all our community heroes who have pledged the oath to save lives, protect us, and keep us safe,” said Catherine Attao-Toves, Tan Holdings executive and event coordinator.

This year marks the 10th annual Field of Heroes, commemorating the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

“This event honors and remembers all our community heroes, including firefighters, police officers, first responders, law enforcement officers, and military veterans,” Toves said.

“Over the past 10 years, our area has experienced natural disasters and the pandemic. We also want to honor those who serve in the medical field and our utilities personnel, who keep us safe during storms and help restore power afterward,” she added.

The Field of Heroes is based on the concept of a healing field and aims to raise public awareness. Approximately 500 American flags will be displayed across the islands, symbolizing “courage, pure intentions, and vigilance.”

“We hope that each garden of flags will bring a sense of healing and unite the community to honor and remember our heroes,” Attao-Toves said.

On Saipan, the Field of Heroes commemoration will begin Sept. 15 at 4:30 p.m. with a freedom walk from Carolinian Utt to American Memorial Park, followed by a ceremony. Tinian’s event will be led by Mayor Edwin Aldan at Veterans Memorial Park on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. while Rota will hold its commemoration Sept. 18 at Melchor Mendiola Leadership Park, starting at 5:30 p.m., under the leadership of Mayor Aubry Hocog.
