ON Wednesday, community volunteer and Parks and Recreation employee Max Aguon discovered used motor oil and oil filters improperly disposed of in a trash bin at Smiling Cove Marina.

“The used oil and oil filter were just dumped inside the trash bin — that’s not good,” Aguon said. “The oil was leaking onto the ground. We should protect our environment and dispose of used oil properly.”

Aguon is widely recognized for his islandwide cleanup efforts. His work has earned numerous commendations and helped raise environmental awareness across the community.

Wednesday also marked Aguon’s first day back on the job after going on medical leave. He underwent glaucoma surgery and a heart checkup in California in April 2025.
