THE Catholic Church on Guam joins the rest of the Church and many others worldwide in mourning the passing of our Shepherd on Earth, Holy Father Pope Francis today. His absence already leaves a big hole in our hearts.
The Vatican announced that Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
Even as we hang our heads in sorrow however, we do so with fervent prayer and deep gratitude to our loving God for the gift of this holy man, Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Twelve years ago on March 2013 he humbly accepted the Holy Spirit’s call to lead our Church as the Vicar of Christ on earth. Many of us recall the look of silent shock the unknown clergyman seemed to have on his face as he first appeared on the balcony amid the cheers of multitudes on March 13, 2013 at Saint Peter’s Square
Our merciful God granted the pope and all of us a period of preparation, prayer and contemplation regarding the possibility of his death which has come true due to prolonged illness. We thank the Lord for that blessing in the midst of our tears.
The Vatican will update all of us. We in turn will communicate to our faithful of Guam. Have faith in the Holy Spirit and please remember our beloved Holy Father in your prayers.
Sincerely,
MOST REVEREND RYAN P. JIMENEZ
Archbishop of Agana
