GOVERNOR David M. Apatang on Friday declared a CNMI state funeral will be held in honor of the late former Lt. Gov. Diego Tenorio Benavente.
Surrounded by family, Benavente, who also served as House speaker, passed away peacefully at his residence in As Lito on Thursday morning. He was 66.
In his declaration, the governor stated that, with profound respect, he and Lt. Gov. Dennis James Mendiola proclaim the Commonwealth State Funeral Service in honor of Benavente, “whose lifetime of public service, humility, and dedication to the people of the Marianas has left an enduring mark on our Commonwealth.”
The state funeral is scheduled for Nov. 29, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., at the Governor Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe. In recognition of Benavente’s distinguished career and contributions to the islands, full honors and ceremonial observances befitting a former lieutenant governor will be rendered.
The state funeral will begin with departure from Borja Funeral Home at 8:40 a.m., proceeding to the multi-purpose center for the official ceremony at 9 a.m. Public viewing will be held at Mt. Carmel Cathedral at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. at Marpi Cemetery.
All CNMI elected officials and regional leaders are respectfully invited to attend and take part in the observance, the governor said. Proper and dignified attire is requested for all official participants. The general public, community organizations, businesses, and non-profit entities are welcome to offer their condolences during the public viewing at the cathedral and to join the Mass of Christian Burial and interment ceremonies to honor Benavente’s life of service.
“Let us unite as a Commonwealth in remembrance of his steadfast leadership, his service to the people, and the legacy he leaves for future generations,” Apatang said.
