(NMC) — Northern Marianas College recently collected more than 300 canned and dry goods during its recent campus-wide food drive for the Proa Pantry. The effort, led by the Office of the President, the Associated Students of Northern Marianas College and the Office of Student Activities and Leadership, took place throughout the months of October and November.
The food drive was organized in response to the temporary suspension of Nutrition Assistance Program benefits that occurred during the recent federal government shutdown. Although distributions have since resumed, the event aimed to replenish resources and support students and families who continue to experience challenges with food access following that disruption.
NMC President Galvin Deleon Guerrero, EdD, commended the campus community for stepping up during a challenging time.
“This food drive is a powerful reminder that at NMC, we don’t let anyone in our community face hardship alone,” he said. “Even as federal assistance resumes, many of our students and families are still feeling the impact of the shutdown and the current economic times. I’m incredibly proud of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni for answering the call, and ensuring that the Proa Pantry remains a reliable source of support for anyone who needs it.”
Students, employees, alumni, and members of the NMC community responded in force, donating a wide range of non-perishable and student-friendly food items including canned proteins, soups, rice, pasta, cereal, and ready-to-eat meals.
“We’re grateful to everyone who donated and helped restock the Proa Pantry,” said ASNMC President Maria Daniella Sablan. “This outpouring of support ensures we can continue providing free assistance to students facing food insecurity, especially during this period of increased need.”
The Proa Pantry remains open to all NMC students, offering free access to essential food items and basic supplies. Donations are accepted year-round at OSAL, and the College encourages ongoing support to help sustain students and families.
