(NMHC) – The Northern Marianas Humanities Council has been awarded a $100,000 Public Knowledge Grant from the Mellon Foundation to support its Digital Archives Project.
This grant will fund two positions — a Digital Archive Coordinator and a Digital Archive Specialist — with additional information about these job opportunities available at nmhcouncil.org. In addition to staffing support, the funding will also provide resources to further the project’s goals and activities, including the Digital Preservation Lab, and a series of public events to support the digital preservation of historic records held by individuals in the CNMI.
NMHC’s Digital Archives Project was established to: make cultural and historic content more accessible and widely available to the people of the Marianas; empower local communities in research, dialogue, programs, and publications; provide access to technology for preserving digital copies of residents’ personal and family collections; and offer a platform for community members to contribute missing information to existing records.
“The Mellon Foundation’s continued investment in public knowledge helps ensure that our islands’ cultural heritage remains accessible to current and future generations,” said Leo G. Pangelinan, Executive Director of the Northern Marianas Humanities Council. “Through this support, the Council will be better equipped to strengthen the preservation and sharing of stories, images, and histories across the Marianas.
“The Northern Marianas Humanities Council extends its sincere appreciation to the Mellon Foundation for its generous support in sustaining the documentation, preservation, and sharing of the Commonwealth’s rich cultural and historical heritage,” he added.
