Marco Peter to run for senator

Marco Peter

FORMER Rep. Marco Taisakan Peter has announced his candidacy for the Saipan Senate seat.
Peter previously served in the 21st House of Representatives, representing Precinct 3.

“As a resident of this beautiful island, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges we face and the economic uncertainty from limited opportunities. That’s why I am running for senator—to help make a difference and bring about positive change,” Peter told Variety in a Whatsapp interview.

On Friday, Peter said he is excited to announce his run for office in the 2026 general election. He will submit his letter of intent to the NMI Republican Party’s board of directors soon.

As a candidate, Peter said he wants to highlight the potential benefits of sports tourism in the community.

He said that while leisure tourism is a significant contributor to the economy, sports tourism offers several advantages, including:

  1. Increased revenue: Sports events can generate significant revenue for local businesses, hotels, and restaurants.
  2. Diversified tourism industry: Sports tourism can help reduce reliance on traditional leisure tourism, making the economy more resilient.
  3. Community engagement: Sports events can foster community spirit and pride, promoting a sense of ownership and participation.
“We need to take advantage of the top-notch sports facilities and equipment that have been built and provided. By leveraging these resources, we can attract more sports events and teams, creating new opportunities for economic growth and community development. As your senator, I’ll work to support initiatives that promote sports tourism and benefit our community,” Peter said.
