JAPANESE Consul Akiko Tejima said she will do her best to foster stronger ties between her country and the CNMI.
Tejima was the Rotary Club of Saipan’s guest speaker during its general membership meeting in the Azucena Room of Crowne Plaza Saipan at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
She talked about the trends and outlook of Japan’s economy, Japanese retirees who are interested in living abroad, and those who may consider the CNMI as their second home.
Tejima, who joined Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990, has worked extensively in economic cooperation, national security, and China-related affairs while serving in various diplomatic posts abroad.
It was her first time on Saipan, which she described as “renowned for its stunning beaches and lush natural beauty” that captivate visitors from around the world.
She said she is also deeply mindful of the island’s history as a battleground during World War II — a time that caused “immense suffering and left lasting scars across the island.”
Noting that the blessing of peace should never be taken for granted, Tejima said she will do her best to foster stronger ties between Japan and the CNMI while ensuring that Japanese nationals in the region receive appropriate consular services.
