MOUNT Carmel School proved they belong among the elite in the boys’ high school division of the PSS-NMIBF Interscholastic Basketball League, school year 2025–26, after escaping with a heart-pounding 50-49 victory over Marianas High School V on Friday at the Marianas High School gym.
From the opening tip, MHS looked like defending champions, led by scoring leader Marc Tengco, whose 10-point performance quickly established a commanding lead. MCS, although struggling to find their rhythm, still showed fight, with Mike Mercado Jr. carrying the team on his back with 10 points. The defending champions, however, had extra firepower, as Paul Lizama, Elijah Ye, and Dane Tibayan were particularly active, drawing early fouls and chipping in key baskets to hold a 27-13 advantage at halftime.
The second half told a different story. Sparked by Enzo Sasamoto’s eight quick points, MCS seized momentum, leaving MHS struggling to respond. The drama reached a fever pitch in the closing minutes as Evan Cabrera and Tyler Omelau tried to keep MHS ahead, but foul trouble began to mount. MCS capitalized on every opening, with Keanu Silva and Austin Hoepner hitting crucial baskets to pull the team within striking distance.
In the final minute, a whirlwind of timeouts and strategic fouls ensued. With seconds remaining, MCS held a one-point lead. MHS had one last possession to steal the game, but MCS’s defense held firm, forcing a contested shot that missed, ending the game 50-49.
