SENATOR Paul A. Manglona on Tuesday sent an inquiry to Isla Community Health Center Chairman Matthew Gregory regarding the current status of the Federally Qualified Health Center or FQHC grant the clinic is expected to receive.
In his letter, the senator said his office had received multiple reports suggesting that the clinic might be preparing to close following the loss of the $1.9 million FQHC grant.
Reaching out to Isla Health Center on Wednesday, Variety was told that the reports were not true.
Noting that the clinic provides essential primary care and preventive health services to a significant portion of the community, including many families who rely on accessible and affordable healthcare, Manglona wrote that the possibility of closure “has understandably created anxiety among constituents who depend on your facility for ongoing medical treatment, chronic disease management, maternal and child health services, and other vital programs.”
Given the importance of these services, Manglona said the Senate Committee on Health, Welfare, and Programs believes it is necessary to obtain clear and accurate information directly from Gregory.
On behalf of the committee, Manglona respectfully requested the following:
• A formal clarification as to whether the clinic is closing, reducing services, or restructuring operations.
• An explanation of the circumstances surrounding the loss of the $1.9 million FQHC grant.
• A detailed overview of the clinic’s current financial standing, including any funding shortfalls and sustainability plans.
• Information on contingency measures being considered to ensure continuity of care for patients.
• Any assistance or legislative support the clinic believes may be necessary to maintain operations.
