Guam Taiwan delegation focus of extensive media coverage

SUN MOON LAKE, Taiwan (Office of the Guam Governor) —On TV, online, and in print, more than a dozen stories about shared bonds with Guam have been featured in the Taiwan media over the past several days as a trade delegation, led by Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, discusses trade, tourism, sustainability, and investment with private and public sector leaders.

Leon Guerrero led the delegation on March 7, which included Régine Biscoe Lee, director of the Guam Visitors Bureau, and senior representatives from the Guam Economic Development Authority. The group was received by Wang Chih-yi, director of the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration.

The Sun Moon Lake region is rich in indigenous traditions, local agricultural specialties, and tea culture, while offering world-class natural scenery and a premier cycling environment. Dynamic, transformative tourism, the sustainable use of marine resources, and the preservation of Austronesian cultures have been the focus of talks to further enhance Taiwan’s tourism brand and friendly image across the Pacific.

The visit included a tour of the Daklaha Floating Bicycle Path, named after a Thao legend about a fish spirit. The tour demonstrated how indigenous cultural imagery can be deeply integrated with landscape aesthetics. Additionally, the delegation engaged in cultural dialogue with the Thao Cultural Development Association, emphasizing the profound historical connections shared by Taiwan and Guam within the Austronesian cultural sphere.

In support of the Guam Green Growth (initiative, the delegation experienced a low-carbon lake tour aboard an electric boat. This experience highlighted Sun Moon Lake’s efforts in managing the carbon footprint of tourism itineraries and developing green tourism experiences. Both sides affirmed the critical role of sustainability in future development.

The Guam governor’s visit successfully transitioned the initial consensus reached during last year’s delegation visit into a meaningful on-site experience, strengthening regional tourism cooperation following the sister-city agreement executed with the city of Kaohsiung.
