Shot put and discus steal the spotlight at athletics kickoff

THE PSS-NMA All School Athletics SY25-26 season officially kicked off yesterday at the Oleai Sports Complex, with middle and high school student-athletes competing in the first qualifier, featuring the shot put and discus events.

In the shot put, the 14U boys division had 20 athletes vying for the top spot. In the end, Kaleb Hossain of Francisco M. Sablan Middle School reigned supreme with a throw of 10.23 m. Jess Jiang of Hopwood Middle School took second with 9.39 m, and Jia He Yu of HMS finished third with 8.99 m.

For the 14U girls, HMS’ Aubyguel Castro edged out Dandan Middle School’s Dreannalyn Yamada with a toss of 6.54 m. Yamada secured second with 6.40 m, while HMS’ Juana Nocos claimed third with 6.29 m.

In the 18U boys division, MHS’ David Ye earned first place with a throw of 10.61 m on his third attempt. YongJun Lin of MHS took second with 8.28 m, followed by Tom Chen of Agape Christian School with 8.15 m.

The 18U girls division saw ACS’ Joanna Zhang claim the top spot with 6.13 m, followed by schoolmate Joyce Ying with 5.85 m and Ny’elle Satoshi of Saipan Southern High School in third with 5.63 m.

In the discus event, DMS’ Kaleb Reyes dominated the 14U boys division with a throw of 40.7 m, nearly 20 m ahead of second-place finisher ACS’ Andy Chen (20.51 m). DMS’ J-vin Bernard finished third with 19.50 m.

In the 14U girls discus, SIS’ Paige Beagle claimed first with 15.1 m, followed by DMS’ Dreannalyn Yamada (14.65 m) and HMS’ Juana Nocos (12.95 m), marking her second top-three finish of the day.

The 18U boys discus podium included Marianas High School’s Payton Basa (27.38 m), ACS’ Yang (22.58 m), and MHS’ David Ye (22.43 m). The 18U girls saw ACS’ Joyce Ying top the competition with 19.75 m, ahead of SIS’ Keylie Claveria (17.33 m) and Jamie Yang (16.02 m).
