IN a display of student leadership and community spirit, the Marianas High School Golf Club has announced the inaugural 2026 MHS Open.

Scheduled for Saturday, May 23, at the scenic Kingfisher Golf Course, the tournament aims to turn birdies into bricks for a campus affected by Typhoon Yutu.

While the tournament promises a day of competitive fun, its primary objective is deeply rooted in the recovery of the MHS community. All proceeds from the event will be dedicated to the reconstruction of the MHS school building, which sustained significant damage during Typhoon Yutu.

By organizing this inaugural event, the MHS Golf Club hopes to establish an annual tradition that not only strengthens local education but also provides a platform for the community to come together for a common cause.

The tournament is a true student-led initiative, spearheaded by two dedicated high schoolers: Sarah Lim, president of the MHS Golf Club, and Zhi Yun Li, former vice president of the MHS Golf Club.

Despite the complexities of securing a premier venue like Kingfisher and coordinating sponsors, the duo has navigated logistical challenges with the guidance of club advisors.

“One of the main challenges we have encountered is coordinating logistics such as securing a venue, sponsors, and organizing participants, but it has been a valuable learning experience for all of us,” the organizers said.

They added that limited spots for the tournament are expected to fill up quickly.

The event is designed to be inclusive, welcoming golfers of all skill levels. To ensure a fair and enjoyable competition, the organizers have selected a unique format — Double Peoria with a Two-Man Scramble.

“This format allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly, encourages teamwork, and keeps the event enjoyable for everyone,” Lim and Li said.

The competition is not just for pride; a significant prize pool is on the line, with $400 for first place, $300 for second, and $200 for third. Accuracy will also be rewarded with Closest to the Pin challenges on holes No. 6, No. 8, No. 12, and No. 15.

With spots limited, interested participants are encouraged to register immediately. Community members looking to support the rebuilding of MHS — or simply enjoy a day at one of Saipan’s most beautiful courses — can reach out via the following:
