Understanding PUA vs. DUA

The CNMI Department of Labor wants to clarify the status of our current assistance programs to ensure everyone reaches the right team for their needs.

🟦 PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance)

Status: Closing Out Ongoing Cases

Program Window: 2020 – June 2026.

New Applications: CLOSED. No new applications are being accepted.

Purpose of current lines: We are currently in the “Close Out” phase. We have reopened these phone lines ONLY so that individuals with existing pending cases can communicate directly with their case workers and finalize their claims before the program ends.

Action: If you have an open claim from the pandemic period, please use the contact numbers provided in our previous post.

🟧 DUA (Disaster Unemployment Assistance)

Status: Pending Federal Approval

Current Phase: Pre-Launch.

Why can’t I apply yet?

Because the CNMI does not have a permanent standing unemployment system, we must receive specific federal approvals and funding windows from the U.S. government before we can officially launch DUA for any recent disasters.

What to do now

Please wait for an official announcement from CNMI DOL. We cannot process DUA applications until the federal “Green Light” is given.
