Peritoneal dialysis services are now available for Rota residents.
(CHCC) — The Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation’s Dialysis Center is proud to announce the availability of peritoneal dialysis services for residents of Rota, offering an alternative to relocating to Saipan for life-sustaining dialysis treatments. This significant development marks a milestone in CHCC’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to essential healthcare services across the Marianas.
For many years, patients in Rota requiring dialysis had no option but to relocate to Saipan to receive hemodialysis treatments. Now, eligible patients can choose peritoneal dialysis, a self-administered treatment that can be performed in the comfort of their own homes. To qualify, patients must satisfy the requirements to be able to perform self-treatments at home.
Peritoneal dialysis is an effective treatment for kidney failure and is particularly beneficial for individuals who wish to maintain an active lifestyle or are considering a future kidney transplant, as it helps preserve remaining kidney function longer than hemodialysis. While this treatment is suitable for most patients, eligibility will ultimately be determined by CHCC’s renal team based on clinical evaluations.
As part of the process, a home assessment will be conducted to determine if the patient’s living environment meets the necessary conditions for peritoneal dialysis, including cleanliness, access to running water, and a dedicated space for supplies. Patients must also demonstrate the physical and mental ability to perform dialysis exchanges, such as handling a two-liter solution bag and following medical instructions. If a patient is unable to manage their treatment independently, a caregiver or family member may be trained to assist, provided they are also capable of performing the procedure safely.
This development means greater convenience, improved quality of life, and better access to essential healthcare. This expanded service allows patients to stay close to their families, maintain their daily routines, and avoid the emotional and financial burdens of relocation or frequent travels to Saipan for treatment.
The Rota Health Center team, in collaboration with the Dialysis Center Staff at CHCC, will provide comprehensive support, training, and resources to ensure patients feel confident and cared for throughout their treatment journey.
The Rota peritoneal dialysis project was made possible through the assistance of congressional designated spending from former Congressman Kilili’s office funded through USDA.
