GOVERNOR David M. Apatang last week nominated CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management’s Janry Santos to represent Rota on the Marianas Visitors Authority Board of Directors.

Santos has been representing HSEM in disaster preparedness activities on Rota.

In a letter to Senate President Karl King-Nabors, the governor waived the employment restriction imposed by Public Law 11-15, which prohibits government employees from serving as members of the MVA Board of Directors. He said the prohibition places an undue burden by limiting the pool of otherwise qualified potential appointees from Rota.

Under 1 CMC Subsection 2901(a), the governor is authorized to waive any statutory employment restriction that would create an undue burden by limiting the pool of otherwise qualified potential appointees.

The governor said he and Lt. Gov. Dennis James Mendiola are confident that Santos is qualified and will be an asset to the board.

In his appointment letter to Santos, the governor said he and the lieutenant governor are confident that Santos will devote his time and efforts to fostering a sustainable tourism industry.

No other information about the nominee was available as of press time Tuesday afternoon.
