KOROR (Island Times/Pacnews) — The 12th Palau National Government was officially installed Thursday last week, marking a peaceful transition of power with a mix of returning and new leaders signaling potential shifts from the past four years.
In the Senate, Hokkons Baules was reinstated as Senate president, with Dr. Stevenson Kuartei elected vice president and Kerai Mariur assuming the role of floor leader. Over in the House of Delegates, as anticipated, Gibson Kanai of Ngaraard State was elected speaker, with Mario Gulibert of Angaur State as vice speaker, and Warren Umetaro of Aimeliik State chosen as floor leader.
This year’s government sets a historic milestone for gender representation, with four women elected to the House of Delegates and two to the Senate, the highest number in Palau’s history.
In the House of Delegates, the elected women included Rebecca Ngirmechaet of Ngchesar State, Stephanie Ngirchoimei of Airai State, Francisca Otong of Ngatpang State and Portia Franz Kesolei of Ngeremlengui State. The two women senators are Rukebai Inabo and Lalii Ann Pedro.
President Surangel Whipps Jr. and Vice President Raynold “Arnold” Oilouch also took their oaths of office in a ceremony highlighted by heartfelt introductions from their children.
As the first administration to take office following four years of navigating a global pandemic, the mood was one of cautious optimism. President Whipps expressed hope for the future and the changes to come, while Senate President Baules reminded lawmakers of the significant challenges that still lie ahead, underscoring the need for continued focus and hard work to lead Palau out of its lingering crises.
